NIGERIAN YOUTH, WHY? - Prof. Wole Soyinka

Where did we go wrong? WAKE UP Nigerian youth!

Awolowo was 37 years, Akintola 36, Ahmadu Bello 36, Balewa 34, Okotie-Eboh 27, and Enahoro 27 and they led the struggle for Nigeria Independence after the death of Macaulay. Only Zik was 42 at the time.

In 1966, the first coup was led by: K. Nzeogwu who was 29 years and countered by M. Mohammed 28, T. Danjuma 28, Babangida 25, Garba 23, Sani Abacha 23, and Yaradua 23, and brought into power Gowon 32, Ojukwu 33, Obasanjo 29, and Buhari 24. Most of the military governors who governed the states under the successive military regimes were under 30 years. The brief democratic.dispensation which interjected the military interregnums also saw some Senators, and the House of Representatives, in particular, populated by members under 30. Under 30's were also not in short supply with.appointments - we have examples of M.T. Mbu who became foreign affairs minister at 23 and Pat Utomi who became a federal adviser at 27 and so on and so forth.

NOW: Why is it that this age bracket is today still sleeping in 3 seater chairs in their parents’ homes? Why is it that this age bracket is today still collecting pocket money from their parents? Why is it that this age bracket is today still writing JAMB? Why is it that this age bracket today still sagg their trousers? Why is it that this age bracket is today still searching for jobs, and not yet married? Why is it that this age bracket is today no longer qualified to even be leaders of youth wings of political parties?

Why is it that this age bracket is today so docile? Why is this age bracket today incapable of feeding itself? Why is it that this age bracket is today barred from even aspiring to certain political offices? Why is it that this age bracket is today incapacitated, unwilling, unable and incapable of asking questions? Why is it that this age bracket is not even conscious of their predicament?

GOD BLESS NIGERIA!

Frustrations Of An Emerging Generation by George Ashiru

This is how you define frustration:

When a bird is all set to fly, and the wind beneath its wings becomes still.

When a man is sent to war, and he is given only one bullet to win the war.

When a footballer shoots at point blank range, only to find that the post has been shifted.

Our emerging generations are full of passion, and haven honed their skills, stretched out their hands to grab at their future, only to see its been stolen by a crooked cabal of rulers...

That, my friend, is the definition of frustration...Frustration is often militant.

SALT ON AN OPEN WOUND? (by Abiodun Fijabi)

We buried the young men and women - 19 or so of them, 3 of them pregnant with children.

Their mistake was that they trusted the system. They had no reason to. They should have realized that an average politician thinks first of himself and last of himself. They should have suspected that the jobs had been shared, long before they became vacant. They should have known that the dogs and the cats of the elite would receive better protection and better attention than jobless graduates. But can you blame them?

Hope is one anchor that keeps us going. Once hope is gone, we are gone. The hundreds of thousands that thronged the stadia and sports centers had held unto hope. May be, Comrade Moro is different. May be, due process will be followed this time. May be, they will protect us and treat of us with some civility this time around. After all, as the Bible says, 'hope does not make ashamed'.

The death of the 19 is the death of hope. We did not only bury the young and agile men and women, we buried the hopes they cherished and the dreams they carried. We murdered them in their prime, cut off their flowers in their blossom, and ended their life's journey in the night before the dawn.

And now, we tell their families, "Give us three job applicants per family. Your slain children have purchased three places in the juicy Nigeria Immigration Service."
What if one family had lost its only child - the only hope of a better future?
What if, no one in the family is qualified for the job? Will we lower the standards? Or, persuade the families concerned to sell their slots to the highest bidders, as some form of compensation?

Meanwhile, no head has rolled. No one has been sanctioned. No one is talking about refunding the applicants' fees.
Even if we all agree that the government's offer is better than nothing, would the families be right to hope again? Should they trust the system, with all of its insensitivity and corruption, to deliver on its promises? Or, would it be another salt on the already open and sore wound?

O God, why can't I easily get these deaths off my mind?

SMART PHONES & PRODUCTIVITY (by Remi Dairo)

Today I will be sharing with you how you can be smarter using the smart phones!

Do you know you can increase productivity by just having a smart phone! Smart phones are not just for calls, sms and playing games!

Below are three (3) powerful ways to use your smart phone to increase productivity:

1. Mind Recalling:
You can use your smart phones to help your mind to recall things!
Your productivity will increase by 50% if you remember what you said you will do or be reminded to do it! You don't have to cram stuff when you have a NotePad on your phone, it helps you to jot down your "quick drops" that you may need to remember later! Calculator, Organizer and To Do App are all available to increase your capacity to produce!

2. Voice Recording:
Most time we attend meetings that we wish we could play back again!
We go for events we wish we could see again! Your brain does not have the capacity to retain all the activities of meetings or events but your smart phone does! You can record voices or videos on your phone, watch them or listen to them over and over again, you will be surprised by your level of productivity after this!
Don't just use your phone to snap use it to bridge gaps!

3. Task Reshuffling:
Friends, you can work and rework on your smart phone!
You can download files, PDF files, documents, powerpoint presentations and other function you use your computer system for! You can read, edit and re-send any document, all these you can do at your comfort at anywhere! Why are you complaining that the lack of a computer has shut down your productivity when you have a smart phone!

As you go out this week, make maximum use of your smart phone and increase your capacity to produce!

Thank You

StepUp! A Teenage Value Orientation Workshop

Have you realized that while we work hard to satisfy our today's need and get to a desired tomorrow, we may arrive there alone?

Statistics show a high steady rise in juvenile delinquency, my research showed that delinquency has been influenced by the following factors among others:

    - Poor parental influence
    - Boredom (nothing to productively engage time)
    - Identity Crises (understanding who & why they are)
    - Undefined life, career, financial and other goals
    - Inability raising funds to support themselves
    - Late admission into tertiary institutions

One best way to secure and preserve the future of our dreams and future is to invest in today’s youth. These young ones will sustain our legacy but if not founded in value, the fear of failure is imminent.

To this we are hosting StepUp!, a Teenage Value Orientation Workshop, in about 9 states: Delta, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, Lagos, Abuja, and Jos from January 17th - March 15th 2014.
It is targeted at helping teens build right value system, set and achieve practical life goals as well as exciting their creative skills to enable them live productively with tangible results.

I NEED YOU to make this happen. If there is anyway you can join the working team, share ideas, raise sponsors, it will be joyfully welcome.
Thanks and have a productive day.. .Impossible is Nothing!

Postponement of Nigeria's Doomsday

This pic is an attestation to the fact that evil doth rule the world. That your life is a part of a grand scheme to give the devil dominion over the world.

I look at this in a Religious and Political eyes because both are in play in this picture. We should really feel lucky in Nigeria especially the youths that you can use a Blackberry to update TGIF every Friday yet the living standards in Nigeria is bad, that you can be Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa and your life isn't threatened while Hutus almost wiped out Tutsis some years back in Rwanda, that we didn't have to fight bloody to gain Independence like the South Africans...BUT feel sad because we have only succeeded in shifting our DOOMSDAY forward.

I am a proponent of Idealism as Materialism has only made everybody in Nigeria lazy. We all love Fela yet the deep message in his songs like "Suffering and Smiling" is overlooked while his weeding habit is embraced as if that's all he taught us.

This Generation lived as though it was created to party and get wasted with dwindling moral values. I wonder if the thousands of generations before us were party animals or funseekers like us if anything worthwhile would be accomplished, Karl Marx, Descartes, Carl Benz, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Da Vinci, Jesus Christ...Even money without values soon fades (I dare you to test the theory). What the f**k did our parents eat or do that made us so worthless?! I jammed up my points yes but i will subsequently pick them out for discuss in due time.

The Last Sensible Reality TV Show in Africa (by Adedoyin Matthew)

It's seem the Nigerian youths are beginning to speak up against the most popular reality TV show in Africa, BigBrother Africa. The reality show which is currently airing on DSTV (the largest TV network in Africa) is acclaimed to be the most viewed program both online and offline with not less than hundreds of thousands clicks added daily on their YouTube channel.
Here is another article by a Nigerian youth speaking on #BBA and other similar reality tv shows. Read and enjoy!

***********************

Maryam Jameelah, a muslim scholar wrote, "never before in the history of man had the graph of moral degradation shown a rapid decline as in the 21st century"

Moral degradation has reached the peak and our sacred parts are not considered sacred again. Human sexual sanctity has deteriorated to a level which is shameful even to the beast. Atimes, I wonder if animal is wiser than man in keeping their sexuality.

Yesterday, I was bombarded with one Alex Osagie's BC asking for the ban of BBA Africa on DSTV. Well, I support his stand but I think we have allowed this satanic manipulation, in the name of reality show come upon us. The last sensible reality show that elope our TV screen is The Debaters season 2 where my brother, Chinedu Chidi came top . This intellectual show left when there was no enough finance to continue, and if I may ask, how many of us even watch or know the debaters? But we are familiar with star quest, MTN Project Fame, Glo Naija Sings, Airtel, Nigeria got talents etc. I'm not saying these shows are bad, but our youth spend more time on them than intellectual and purpose driven shows.

This is my point: It is not just enough to call for the ban of BBA; it is not just enough to broadcast Alex's message; let's also change the mentality and mindset of our young ones starting with ourselves - Let's stop voting for housemates, let's stop sending sms and let's stop watching it. And let's promote intellectual events that will cause a positive change.

PS: You know Wizkid and Davido but do not know Chinua Achebe. You are one of the reasons Prof. Wole Soyinka said this generation is dead on arrival.

WHY SPEND SO MUCH ON SUPER EAGLES?

Against all odds, skeptics and doubters, the Super Eagles of Nigeria surprised the African continent and the world at large by winning the most coveted golden prize at the AFCON 2013 competition after 19years. Indeed, they deserve to be appreciated for giving nigerians atleast one thing to be happy about especially at this crucial time when nothing seem to be working right in our polity. It has been highlighted severally that football as a sport is the only unifying factor amongst the nigerian people. And whenever there is a football match, Nigerians would usually put aside their socio-ethnic and religious differences to enjoy the game from start to finish, only to continue with their differences after the match is ended (how ironic).

The news about the Nigerian government splashing millions of naira as well as national honours on the Super Eagles team for winning the AFCON 2013 is actually not surprising, why? Because this is not the first time this is happening, however, this supposed show of gratitude is beginning to reflect negatively on the present administration as being squanders and frivolous spenders. We are not saying that the Super Eagles should not be celebrated or rewarded, but the question is "are we doing it the right way and for the right reasons?"

We must not forget that there are over 40million youths on the streets without job, even those who has got great ideas cannot start-up due to lack of capital and absence of basic social infrastructures which are not in place. It appears that the government of the day is very spontaneous when it comes to dashing out money to show-off while leaving pertinent issues to suffer without urgent attention. For instance, the plots of land dashed out to individual football players could have been given to hundreds of fresh graduates with great ideas for agro-farming business and other productive ventures which in later years would contribute to the nation's economic power and reduce the rate of unemployment.

As for the national honours, I don't know the criteria for which the government selects her recipients so I won't say much except to point out the fact that there are many remarkable nigerians who have done so much more for this country and are yet to receive such honour. Having expended more than is expected on the Super Eagles, Mr. President, further urged each of the 36 state governors to join in on the wasteful show by making sure they reward the team in each of state respectively. Fortunately or unfortunately, the Dangote Group, Globacom and Tom Tom has also joined the highest spender popularity contest.

Let me say it categorically to all our elected goverment officials, and perhaps to the privileged few who don't know where to invest their money, that entertainment and sport is not the only thing that the nigerian youth knows how to do best. We are creative people with fantastic revolutionary business and socio-developmental ideas geared towards putting Nigeria in the circle of developed nations. Entertainment and sports are good venture, but no matter how hard you try, it won't make our present challenges with poor power supply, bad road, poor educational standard, amongst other things disappear until we place the right people in the right positions to do the right thing at the right time for the right reasons. They  should have it at the back of their minds that the Nigerian people, especially the hungry, the jobless, the unpaid pensioners, the homeless citizens are all watching!

Lagos. The 2012 CYFI year is set to conclude this February 13th, 2013, with the awards ceremony for fellows, after which fellows will be inducted into the CYFI Alumni Program.

The Awards & Closing Ceremony which is strictly by invitation will hold amidst tight security at the U.S. Consul General residence in Lagos. Other special guest would include the current U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Terrence P. McCulley, Jeffrey Hawkins (U.S. Consul General, Lagos), government officials and other high profiled individuals both from U.S. and from within Nigeria.
